If You Could Change One Thing About Yourself…
If you could change one thing about yourself, why would you stop there. We being the conscious creatures that we are have the ability to change the way that we are. Its miraculous when you think about it. The sad thing is, how many of us really optimize this ability.
It took me 30 years to come to the realization I had the power to change the way that I am. And even with that, I have only made tiny baby steps in the direction I want. Perhaps its not so easy, but I guess nothing really worth doing in life ever is. The amount that I accomplished for myself sometimes doesn’t seem very apparent, until I step back and really gauge it. When I do I can see it has been the most worthwhile endeavour of my life and that helps give me the motivation to keep going.
Change is the default mode in the natural universe, so why do many of us cling to rigidity and habit so strongly, even when we wish for change? Good question, and one I don’t have the answer to. I can say that it often takes considerable effort to enact change with in oneself. The interesting thing is a lot of us seem focused on trying to change others, which is actually impossible, instead of putting that effort towards ourselves.
Maybe part of it has to do with responsibility, and many of us are scared or just don’t want to admit we are responsible for ourselves. Maybe its because this is what we are taught from an early age, to rely on others to be responsible for us. The farmer is responsible for producing food for us, the government is responsible for telling us what is right and wrong, the doctor for our health, the teachers responsible for telling us what is important to learn, and the corporations telling us what things we need. You would think with all this freed up responsibility we might have more time to focus on being responsible for our emotions, thoughts and actions. Perhaps it works the other way, and with this learnt dependence we have learnt not to be responsible for ourselves and the way that we are.
Well part of my goal is to unlearn that, to own up to the responsibility of being the way that I am, and to take the effort necessary to change what needs or I want to be changed.
